Jessica M. Sykes is the Assistant professor of Psychology & Human Services at Bluefield University. In addition to her Ph.D in Counselor Education & Supervision. Jessica holds dual licensure in both substance use and mental health fields as a Licensed Professional Counselor(LPC) and a Licensed Substance Use Treatment Practitioner(LSATP). Professor Sykes teaches in the undergraduate Psychology & Human Services program, and has specialized skill in course design, course mapping, active learning, student success and wellness. Sykes has two earned Master's Degrees. The first a Masters of Education Counseling and Guidance(M.Ed.) from Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tennessee in 2006 and the second a Masters of Education in Counseling and Human Development (M.Ed.) in 2019 from Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia, Kentucky. Jessica currently holds an PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision from Lindsey Wilson University. Dr Sykes completed her dissertation in areas of academia success with research study: “A Study of Factors that Influence Academic Success in Undergraduate College Students in Central Appalachia.” Sykes has a wide range of clinical training and experience in which she has worked in private and community settings for profit and nonprofit organizations. She has experience in a host of populations such as: severe and persistent mentally ill adults, K-12 school settings, Higher education and corrections. Ms. Sykes has approximately 20 years of experience in areas of counseling, substance abuse, trauma, crisis, clinical supervisory and executive team roles. Jessica’s psychotherapeutic special interests include: student success, spirituality, addiction, depression, sport performance, suicidality and trauma. Jessica works from a holistic integrative perspective believing that one form of intervention and teaching limits the consumer’s growth and potential. Jessica tailor’s interventions and teaching to the individual need allowing the growth of the therapeutic relationship and to help others reach their full potential as a servant leader.
